Philmont Scout Ranch is located about 5 miles from us. We have hundreds of Scouts stay with us the night before they go for their trek at Philmont. Philmont will provide transportation from Raton, NM train station to our campground and take you from our campground to Philmont the morning your group is to report for your expedition.
There are many eating places within hiking distance. Cree-Mee Drive In, The Porch, Simple Simon's Pizza, Heck's Restaurant, St. James Hotel, Double C and a 30's soda fountain at the Cimarron Art Gallery.
The Cimarron Art Gallery is a shop that is full of Boy Scouts all summer. As the name implies they have lots of beautiful, local art, but they also have Wood Badge items and the 1930's soda fountain. Scouts also shop there for souveniers and gifts for their families and friends. There are several other local shops adjacent to Cimarron Art Gallery.
We have two camping areas for tent camping. Our lower camp ground is an area away from the main camp ground on the bank of the Ponil Creek, there you have a large grassy area for pitching tents, lots of large trees, a fire pit, water faucet, 110 electrical outlet and some rustic seating and a table.
The other area is in the main camp ground under a double row of trees with shade and a fire pit. It is closer to the bath house, laundry and pavillion, also there is plenty of room to throw around a ball or frisbee and a basket ball hoop. We often have parents stay with us while their Scouts are at Philmont. Many of the Scout groups stay with us for 2-3 days before going to Philmont so they can tour the area.
We have some museums and even a haunted hotel. At the St. James Hotel you can eat, watch a video replay of the TV show that featured the haunted St James. The hotel has a lot of history and is a museum in itself.
